Need help booting openSUSE - Madderc - 09-15-2013

Hey y'all,

So here's the thing, my computer came with windows 8, I then decided to install ubuntu in it and so I did, had some problems but it was pretty much just about getting around UEFI, which I then found out how and installed it fairly easily.

The instalation worked, if I entered the BIOS options I could choose either windows or ubuntu, if I chose windows it would automatically boot me into windows, and if I chose ubuntu it would take me to the GRUB boot menu which I could choose ubuntu, windows and some other options... after some time the windows one stopped working (if selected from the GRUB), don't quite remember why or what I did but it didnt matter, could still boot from the BIOS though.

But recently I decided to try openSUSE, since ubuntu used 100GB of the disk and I only had 100GB free (1TB disk) I decided to delete ubuntu, so I just deleted it's partitions... that... didn't work out too well, I installed openSUSE but couldnt boot it, the grub was messed up and gave errors, even though it installed it still wouldnt show as an option on the BIOS (ubuntu was there though, even if it was deleted)

After a lot of mistakes and corrections, I am now at a part where I can still boot windows from the BIOS, have openSUSE installed but can't boot it (and still got ubuntu BIOS options even though they take me to "grub rescue> _ ")

So what I need now is to find a way to boot into openSUSE.

What I do have access to: My laptop, my gf's laptop (probably), a 8GB USB, a 16GB USB if it's really needed, Ubuntu, Kali and openSUSE ISO's (already on my PC) and internet of course.
The USB's and the ISOs are to create bootable USB's of course, and I can do some stuff with the LIVE versions hopefully

Anyone know how to fix grub or something similar so I can boot openSUSE?

Thanks again though :3

Take a look at this. It's talking about Ubuntu but should work on your system I've used it to recover a Fedora partition in the past) you will need a live CD/USB to boot the Ubuntu iso with the recovery tool installed then just run the boot repair application and it will uninstall grub scan your disks for all OS's and then reinstall and configure it for you. Just make sure you read it thoroughly and follow the instructions exactly as mistakes here could make things worse!

Yea I tried it before, it DID make things worse xD

It actually caused my windows to become unbootable Biggrin

Luckily I was able to fix it, using gparted and a few console commands I believe.

But before I fixed it, I did try using Boot-Repair to try and repair the damage I had done, and figured I would select "Purge and reinstall grub" (because since the grub was faulty, it seemed like the most logical option)

However, it then reached a part where it told me to copy and paste a command on the terminal, but the terminal kept telling me "unknown file or folder 'dpkg'" (or something along those lines)...

So... I could maybe try it again, but either my Ubuntu ISO might have something missing, or something while creating a bootable USB or something else...

But just a thing I'd like to make clear, for me to fix this, the LIVE USB distro that I will most likely use will be Ubuntu right?

If you have a opensuse iso image you can use Rufus to make a bootable usb ..It works great and I recommend it.
http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Or if you are trying to dualboot win/ubuntu use wubi ..You can find it here -> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer

I see what options did you choose (auto or manual), and was there any error messages before this? dpkg should be installed by default on Ubuntu.

I chose the advanced options, from what I read in Boot-Repair's instructions, the options from the recommended install are selected by default.

I think I pretty much only selected Purge and reinstall grub.

Yea... while looking around the internet for similar problems I saw a guy who said he didnt have some commands, he reinstalled the OS ISO or something and it got fixed, which I assume is the same issue I am having.

Just a question of opinion though, think it's a problem with the ISO or with the creation of the USB?

RE: Need help booting openSUSE - chmod - 09-16-2013

It could Be either, or even just a random bug. You should always check the md5checksum before burning/mounting the iso to check for a corrupted download.
