[Dota 2] Introduction to the basic gameplay. - SPG.WoLF_TSC - 01-20-2013

A little note: If you would like to play Dota 2, but don't have an invite, you can freely send me a PM with your Steam nick and I will send you one. Wink If you don't know what Dota 2 is, then this guide may NOT be meant for you.

Dota 2 - Introduction to the game and the different phases.

Dota 2 is a 5v5 team MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), in which you need to destroy the enemies' base. The key to success in this game is mostly teamplay, but sometimes individual skills can help your team a lot. In this tutorial I am covering some basic things you should know about Dota 2.

So let's start, shall we?

The picking phase...

...is practically the start of the game, where you choose the hero you want to play with. If you are new to the game, i can suggest you to pick Skeleton King. Now you may ask : why him? Because:

1. He has only 1 active spell (a spell you must target yourself) and that is a stun+slow. It is called Hellfire Blast.

2. His 2. and 3. spell synergize pretty well together - Vampiric Aura (that means that you drain a percentage on the damage dealt against an enemy each hit) and Critical Strike.

3. His ultimate is basically something that will not let you die ;D It is called Reincarnation, and when you die, if the spell is ready and you have 140 mana, you will respawn after 5 seconds in exactly the place where you've died and slow all enemies in a radius.

That is why he is considered "easiest hero in-game" (at least in my eyes) and is perfect to get in the gameplay itself.

Of course, there are many other heroes, and you are free to pick every hero you want, so experiment with some heroes to see which one fits your style best.

Sometimes, a succesful pick can flip the whole game, so choose wisely, because you CAN NOT repick once you have your hero picked.

Pre-game and early game...

... are the period of time when the team creeps haven't spawned (pre-game) and when creeps spawn, then early game starts.

I won't cover the pre-game much now, as there are some things which you shouldn't make worries about if you are new. The only thing I would say about the pre-game, is that buy your starting items, which are divided in 2 main categories - HP Regen and Stats. I will tell more about them in an another tutorial.

The early game is like the first 10-20 minutes of the game, when nobody isn't heavily leveled up and are sitting in the lane and farming creeps. The most important thing you need to do in early game is to last hit the enemy creeps. What that means is - you wait until the enemy creep is at low health and then you get the last hit on it, which gives you gold. Speaking about gold, you should get your basic items as fast as possible, that mostly includes boots, a magic wand, and some kind of stats. If you feel that you can kill an enemy in an another lane, you can go to the lane and try killing him, that is called ganking. Beware thou, if you fail at the attempt to gank, you will not get the experience you would have gotten if you would have stayen in lane and farmed.

Mid game...
...is like the middle of the game, when teamfights occur and when you gain map control (or lose).

In the mid game period, you should stop farming so much and start pushing towers, that means that you try to kill the enemy creep wave as fast as possible to advance your creeps further to the enemy towers and taking them down. But you shouldn't avoid teamfights, unless you are more or less useless in them, then you can stay somewhere in the trees and pop out and kill 1 or 2 enemies. Of course, there are some teamfight beasts, which have great AOE (area of effect) spells, like Enigma or Faceless Void. Warlock's ultimate isn't bad too. Those heroes should be in every teamfight at all costs.

It is important to gain dominance by winning teamfights and pushing down towers, because like every game's result is decised in the mid game.

Late game...

...is like after 40 minutes+, when everyone is farmed up and lvl20 or so. Most games end here, or even before late game, so I won't say anything about it.

That is it for this guide, I hope you found it helpful and learned something.

Read this through a pair of times and practice in-game. Also, await my next tutorial about items.

Nice tutorial although I'm totally done with MOBA's.
I've played LoL, HoN and DOTA. I just can't stand getting a retarded team and wasting 40 minutes.

Well, i have played both, and in my experience, LoL is not balanced enough, not like Dota. In LoL, there are some champions who are beasts and some weaker ones. In Dota, though, you need some skill and basic understanding for everything to go how you want it to be. That's why Dota may be harder at the beginning, but it is more fun than LoL. That is just my opinion though, and you may prove me false.
