MyBB is very nice to use. I have used it in the past and the newer versions of it are pretty secure.

MyBB is nice! And it's easy to install!

Phpbb I would honestly not suggest, from what I've looked into it in the past, it has far to many security risks, but as everyone here has stated, mybb is pretty patched up.
And it's a little bit easier to patch up yourself, if the need arises that is.

I have tried out a lot of forum software, and i would actually say phpBB over MyBB. It's actually just a matter of what you like. phpBB and MyBB are very similar, and they do both have good support.
I have also worked with a lot of other forum software, let me know if there's anything you want to know.

mybb is most protected bro.

I don't know about PHPbb.
MyBB, Xenforo, IPBoards, vBulletin, all are really good.
MyBB being free, easily customizable, is the best choice for a beginner webmaster.
