Requesting Tutorial On Phone Phreaking Techniques - NgativeZero - 11-27-2012
Hi, I was researching Phone Phreaking, and I thought it might be interesting to try, but the 1 technique I found doesn't work. :/ It's where you take a voice recorder, drop in $0.50(where I live anyways) and record the tones that the coins make when they're put in, and hang up and get the money back, then replay the recording into the speaker, and it should give you a free call. :/ but when I tried it, nothing happened. If someone would be kind enough to inform me of what techniques still work, that would be much appreciated.

Hmm. I dont have any ideas on this, but that one seems too unreasonable to work in the first place.

a guy said he lived in NYC, when he tried it, & he had to drop in $5 in quarters, then he recorded the tones, & it worked... but this was in 1995. :/ so idk if it still works, or if it EVER worked where I live. lol

From observing the telephone engineers that have been to my properties over the years, they have what can only be described as an 80's mobile phone. When they plug it in they can do all sorts of Diagnostics on phone lines, enable services and make free calls ( achieved through dialing certain numbers ). Phreaking died out along time ago with the introduction of new switching technologies. Phone engineer tools are pretty much as close as your going to get to the old school pastime unfortunately.
As for the recording of tones when entering money, a payphone coin system works on the same principles as a vending machine. It will check the size and weight of a coin before accepting or returning it.

You could look in the anarchist's cookbook for phone phreaking techniques. I believe it's covered in there. Just be careful of where you download the pdf book if that's your method for getting it, I heard that it's tracked by the government and they can add your ip to the watch list.

It is covered, but the tutorials are ancient and no longer work with the newer technologies that have been implemented. Good place to learn about how it was done, and how people created their own hardware to phreak.
