Spoiler:Privacy and anonymity has been reduced to the point of non-existence in recent years. These are dark times. The Fourth Amendment has all but disappeared, thanks to the Wars on Drugs, Terror, and Porn. How we got to a legal state where all this activity is the accepted norm, I'm not quite sure. This document seeks to provide the means to protect your right to privacy, freedom of speech, and anonymous net access even under the most draconian of conditions - including, but not limited to, both private and criminal investigation (which happens far more often to innocent people than one might like to think). "So what are you saying? That I can dodge bullets?" "No... What I am trying to tell you is that when you're ready, you won't have to." The Matrix
What is the Matrix? Spoiler:MORPHEUS: Let me tell you why you are here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life. There's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about? NEO: The Matrix? MORPHEUS: Do you want to know what it is? Neo nods. MORPHEUS: The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us, even now in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. NEO: What truth? MORPHEUS: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind. Let's begin by discussing what the Matrix is not. The Matrix is not the physical world. The Matrix is not the Internet, either. "So, what is the Matrix?" Well, it's complicated. The Matrix is the social structure that subordinates Humanity to its will. The machines that live off this power are institutions: large corporations, governments, schools, religious institutions, and even not-profit organizations. After awhile of serving it's original purpose, there comes a point where these institutions stop serving the need for human governing, education, and betterment, and start serving their own self-preservation and perpetuation. Governments cease to serve the people and instead seek to extend their power over them.(USA: Patriot Act, SOPA/PIPA, NDAA, etc.) Corporations prioritize increasing shareholdervalue over producing quality products or otherwise serving the public good. Schools see students as a means, not an end.(I often say that society sees anyone under 18 as a statistic, not a human being.) Religious organizations equate membership with salvation(and actively oppose other teachings and even independent practice). Non-profits and charities spend more budget on fund raising activity than on their original focus. Inevitably all large institutions eventually become machines. They become too big for Humanity. Resisting the Matrix
Spoiler:Resistance is a mental state. Resisting the Matrix requires understanding its operating principles and assumptions, rejecting them, and helping others in doing the same. The Matrix is fascist, the Matrix is deceptive, and the Matrix is bureaucracy. The Matrix is essentially the rule of the institution over the individual. Individuals have to believe, or at least not actively oppose the idea, of the Matrix. They have to accept the program, do their jobs, pay their taxes, and be content with their salary (Go to school, get a diploma, go to college, get a degree, go to work, pay what you "owe", die.) Rejecting these beliefs is the first step in resisting the Matrix. To persist, the Matrix requires control, and in democratic societies it maintains this control by filtering people's view of reality through corporate-owned mass media and television. Everything the public knows about the world, the know through the Matrix. Understanding this bias in the media is key to undoing the filter it applies. Consider who the advertisers and sponsors are, beware of press releases disguised as investigative reporting, confirm mainstream, corporate coverage from places like IndyMedia, Wikinews, GNN, Politech, Free Speech TV, Democracy Now, Free Speech Radio news, and FAIR. Last, and assuredly not least, the Matrix seeks to identify and know its members at all times in a misguided attempt to maintain control. It is by breaking this last property of the Matrix that we come to truly free ourselves from it. Of course, the ultimate form of resistance is to fully disconnect from any and all dependence on the Matrix. Unfortunately, for many this form of resistance is simply unattainable due to family and social ties, especially when you realize the size and scope of the Matrix. However, it IS possible to liberate yourself gradually instead of immediately, and in some cases this can prove easier than an 'all-at-once' scenario. It starts with disconnecting. Cut out TV from life entirely, especially TV news and Reality TV shows. You should get all your information from the web, or from real reality (or from the occasional movie). Avoid chains stores where possible. Supporting smaller business keeps entrepreneurial and independent business alive. Getting and staying out of debt, especially debt without equity, or rapidly depreciating equity). From here, a limited form of resistance whereby you leave the Matrix for short periods of time is well within reach of all computer literate individuals, and functioning as a consumer is sufficiently supportive of the Anonymous Economy (that is, the market of buying and selling goods and services anonymously, not related at all to the hacktivists) for it to be sustainable. As you progress, you'll notice yourself developing one or more separate identities, or pseudonyms. It is best to build as much insulation between these 'nyms' as possible. The adept and the entrepreneurial will find it an easy step from here to total freedom. The next step is to go into business for yourself. It doesn't have to be an anonymous business, but those who manage such an achievement do enjoy the satisfaction that they are directly subverting the Matrix and helping weaken its hold on everyone. Subverting the Matrix
Spoiler:Resisting the Matrix is an act of mental rebellion. Subverting the Matrix is an act of social revolution. It requires understanding communities outside of the Matrix, what sustains them, and if & how they directly or indirectly weaken the structure and control of the Matrix. Gift Culture
Spoiler:Gift Culture (GC) is a social structure where your status is determined by how much you are able to give away. GC has brought forth much of what we're familiar with today: the Internet, the Open Source movement, vulnerability and security research, (hacking, as we know it) and Wikipedia. Gift economies tend to function best in the digital world, where something can be given without reducing the inventory of the giver. Information Anarchy
Spoiler:
Information Anarchy (IA) is closely related to Gift Culture. The idea is that all information should be as widely and freely disseminated as possible. This is, obviously, at odds with Intellectual Property, and needless to say, the machines of the Matrix don't take to this idea. IA directly challenges the Matrix's perceived right of ownership of ideas. The Matrix draws tremendous power from ideas and digital content/information. Recent examples include the DMCA, extension of copyright duration, the harsh criminalization of copyright infractions, the criminalization of certain forms of technology. The legal climate for free speech and innovation has never looked darker. However, hope is not lost. The future looks dark precisely for the reason that IA poses a threat to the Matrix. On some level, the Matrix knows its hold is tenuous. The Matrix uses propaganda at every opportunity to try and convince you that Intellectual Property encourages creativity. This is observably false. As more people cease to support the Matrix's idea of Intellectual Property, its power will wane, become weaker, and less relavent. The Anonymous Internet Economy
Spoiler:
A major source of the erosion of civil liberties is the fact that casual transactions are becoming increasingly difficult to conduct anonymously. With the increase in volume of Internet commerce, purchases are now irrevocably tied to your own personal identity. Amazon, for example, now builds complete dossiers on their customers, much of which is available publicly. The natural reaction to this is to make Internet commerce more like its physical counterpart, where you have the ability to purchase anonymously with cash. An Anonymous Internet Economy. The Matrix is providing incentive, too. Imagine how easy it would be for the FBI to demand the records of someone on Amazon or the keywords of someone on Google(this kind of thing already happens, remember HideMyAss ratting out LulzSec?)? (The Document then describes how an AIE could work, but digresses.) The demand for an AIE may not be visible now, but once the next Patriot Act, (or SOPA or PIPA or NDAA) passes and removes all anonymity, the demand would skyrocket.
