Are you renting a modem/router device from your ISP? If so, why?! - roger_smith - 11-15-2014

So I recently established new internet service because I sold my old house, bought a new one, and moved. My old ISP had service available in the area, but it was only 2 meg, and ain't nobody got time for that. The ISP I went with has 15meg and will be rolling 50 meg into my area within the next year or so.

Of course, they wanted to rent me a modem device for something like $5 a month. However, I already have a modem from a previous ISP that I own, so why would I rent it? It doesn't make sense to rent a modem in my personal opinion, because for the cost of renting a modem for a year (or significantly less) I could buy one and save money long term.

How many of you are renting modems from your ISP, and why?

I was forced to rent a modem because my previous modem did not support my new services, according to them.. I am now with TWC, but how could I possibly argue that statement.
They're all Jews.

do you just have internet with them, or is it a bundle package?

@Fury http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/enjoy/better-twc/internet/internet-modems.html for less than $100 it looks like you could own your modem instead of renting.

Well I'm paying ~$250/month for cable/internet currently, so I think I may hop to ATT for one year for the promo prices, then hop back to TWC. Just play the promos, considering I didn't sign any contracts.

wow that's a lot of money. I'm paying 30 a month for internet (granted it's only 15 meg) on promo. u might tell TWC you're going to leave and see if they give you promo without you having to actually jump around, I've done that before.

Being only 22 and moved around for work until now I haven't had the oppourtunity to renegotiate yet, might not be a bad idea.

$250 is a lot. I need the net speeds and the wife wants 400+ channels lmao.

I prohibit television in our home. We have Hulu/netflix and it's bad enough. In this new place there was already an aerial antenna installed, and the GF found out she could get local cable... It's obnoxious, but at least it's free obnoxious.
