Suggestion: Thread auto close - roger_smith - 10-03-2014

So I've noticed some grave digging lately and I know that tends to make people the crank sauce. There should be some way to implement an auto-close on threads that have not had a reply in the last say 60 or 90 days or something. Set the threshold to whatever, but that would prevent a lot of necromancers from performing their dark art.

Thoughts? Suggestions? hate mail?

I don't think so. As long as the most recent posts are relevant and the thread is actually still good and useful, I could careless if it get's gravedug and I think most members here still think the same way.

I am with @Tarew - Gravedigging is only really gravedigging if the topic is dead. Dead does not necessarily mean simply age. If you find a thread thats unanswered but 3 years old and you answer it - that benefits the community. It may not benefit the OP but you never know who might find the answer in a Google result. Having solid threads that answer questions will attract new users.

Likewise - If someone asks a simple question a week ago and gets answered immediately. Yet 5 days later someone else posts the same answer. Or something off topic. They are gravedigging. This goes for people who simply post ~"nice tut" or an equally LQ response on a 2 week old tutorial or a 3 year old tutorial.

I am more inclined to believe that LQ posting should be punished by the mods rather than having a system based method for automatically closing threads after an arbitrary amount of time. I moderate/administrate a few other forums and this is the approach I take . If someone does it once I hit the delete button (LQ Posts, not Gravedigging, although they often overlap). If someone goes on a spamming spree and does it 20-30 times (Eg C/P the same thing) I give them a warning and state that this is unacceptable.

So how about x days since last post opposed to topic created. Boom problem solved.

There is a public plugin that does exactly this. I'm sure @Oni knows where to find it.

That's what I was referring to. If the thread has not had activity in the last $NUMBEROFDAYS, it would be closed.

I just figured i'd float the idea because there's been a number of threads lately that I've read where someone bumped an old balls thread, and the next response told that person not to grave dig threads.

Because it's only a problem if you think it's a problem. I would suspect that the problem is more that people are posting LQ stupid shit on old threads that don't contribute anything to the discussion.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that once a thread reaches an age of X that it is automatically no good any more regardless of the content or what someone could potentially still contribute.

I concur with this post.

I get what your saying but I have yet to see an instance here were someone revives a 3 month dead thread with useful content instead of a "thanks nice thread" followed by a lot of neg rep.

I'm of the same opinion. I think users should be able to close their own threads, however.
