Scotland to Become Independent From the UK? - MainCharacter - 09-09-2014

Wikipedia Wrote:A referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country will take place on Thursday 18 September 2014.

Following an agreement between the Scottish Government and the United Kingdom Government, the Scottish Independence Referendum Bill, setting out the arrangements for this referendum, was put forward on 21 March 2013, passed by the Scottish Parliament on 14 November 2013 and received Royal Assent on 17 December 2013.

The referendum question, as recommended by the Electoral Commission, will be "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Any person from the UK or even Scotland, what do you think about this piece? Chances of succeeding? Benefits or disadvantages?

This was news more than a week ago.

I heard about this around two months ago, if I recall correctly. I don't think they should be independent from the UK.

What happened recently? I heard there was some kind of vote that made the Scot's departure imminent.

EDIT: They won't be able to use our pound though, which is good.

I'm from Scotland! Smile

Scotland will be better off independent... We have the money in oil to do so. Never mind this "the oil will run out soon" bullshit. Westminister are shitting themselves, using their last resorts to try bribe Scotland to a No vote.

@Eclipse, you don't know if we will or will not use the pound. I think we will. If not, Westminister would've said something by now. They've not exactly said no. The pound is as much ours as it is yours.

No, they've said if Scotland removed itself from the UK, they could not share the pound.

Personally, I think Scotland is entitled to independence if they want it. I am curious what their currency would be, though.

I do not understand why you would say never mind to this.. I believe Scotland has rights to be Independent if it so wishes.. However, it is hard to ignore the fact that it is a very large problem. The rest of the UK (and the rest of the world eventually) have a similar issue.

Other problems that I want to know what you think of:

-Potential for Tax raises. The potential leaders of Scotland may have rights to increase your taxes. Do you think that is likely?

-Debt share. How do you reckon that will affect Scottish people?

-EU membership - Is it likely you will join the EU?

-What do you think of the Queen staying in "rule" (or the lesser version of ruling if you get my meaning)? I was under the impression that the next campaign would be to no longer be a monarchy as well?

-I'm equally curious as to what will happen to some businesses. For example, I have worked for a coach company that deal with transfers from Edinburgh to ports in southern England. They have offices located in Edinburgh and in southern England. Will they become "international" companies? What happens with relationships that already exist?

In some ways I think it could be great for Scotland. In others I think it will be a mess to sort out that may have long backlogs of problems. I personally would like to remain united. However, I wouldn't put someone down for disagreeing. I have a long line of Scot blood in me, despite the fact that I currently live in South-East England. I certainly love Scotland.

Sorry I have so many questions xD Have fun reading my wall of text.

I'm Not Scottish or English, but part of the forgotten part of the UK. I can understand why they want to leave. They have been shat upon by Thatcherite (Reagan) policies for over 30 years.

To use a dirty word for Americans I would say Scotland political view is Socialism. Like me they agree with the NHS, and helping the put upon and downtrodden.

If they decide to go independent then good luck. My only problem is they will leave me stuck with bastards they don't want. However if the do go they will need to find a new currency as if they keep the pound then they are no truly independent and it will be England and Westminster who will continue to set their monetary policies.

It's complicated, but the Scottish do deserve the choice to choose their own destiny.

First of all; I'd like to make something clear:
- "The United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)" consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
- "Great Britain" consists of England, Wales and Scotland, and
- "Britain" is the cute couple being England and Wales.

Although I don't think there's a need for either UK or Scotland needs to be under the same regime, I see just as little reason for Scotland to break out from the UK.
I can definitely see why the Scottish people want an independence, but I think we should be striving toward more countries under the queen's obedience, not fewer ^^
