This month of February.... - warmweatherwoman - 02-19-2014 On my commute to work this morning there was a discussion on the radio I found interesting and thought I would share here. The question posed was is it still relevant to observe black history month? Do people still observe it. Now my initial answer to this was of course its relevant its part of US history...but after hearing a caller call in and explain that he is from a mixed race family and the racial tension that this month brings is not worth the hassle anymore. He also stated it just puts the focus on black and white...and we should have all evolved from that way of thinking. So I guess I'm asking how you feel about it. Is Black History lost? Do you feel it should still be observed? Do you feel it should just be forgotten? A school in Texas recently changed their history books to refer to slaves as "interns". I think this is taking away from the true history here- I mean interns?? Really....so they WANTED to be shipped here in a plank position head to toe and beaten and lynched all in the name of an internship! Come on! I personally think it should continue to be observed because history has a funny way of repeating itself..and we should all ...adults and youth alike be aware of what this country is capable of. RE: This month of February.... - Skitstep - 02-19-2014 I agree with what you said, It should continue to be observed. The thing I don't like about the month is that some blacks that I know think that we should give them extra attention because it's "their month." In reality - It's the HISTORY of the blacks and where they came from. It should still be observed, but in the right way. RE: This month of February.... - Illuminati - 02-19-2014 I personally don't think it really changes anything these days as it's a different country compared to when they came up with the idea. However, removing the month would cause a bunch of riots. So, I think although it's not really a special month anymore for the most part, it's here to stay. I remember it being a huge thing a while back, now it's hardly even mentioned. But I doubt it will go anywhere. I also see a lot of black people taking credit for all the things their ancestors went through and think they're better then white people due to what their ancestors did. |
