These days there isn't anymore a superior console. Just keep in mind that many games don't support multiplatform cross play, so you probably want to choose based on what consoles do your friends play on.

Do you have an existing library or consoles, or are you going into it fresh?
Xbox is generally considered superior for backwards compatibility and Game Pass, while PS5 has the option of getting a PS5 Pro if you care about raw graphics. I have a Series X because I've had a 360 and Xbox One, so I have the library in physical discs to come with it.

The latest xbox digital edition costs like $500 which is honestly okay for budget price if you just want to game and not go crazy breaking bank for something strong enough to handle modern games.
