How hard is it for a retailer to track a refunder? - wjts1_ - 08-02-2024

It might be more of a question of internet privacy/security, rather than SE.

As we all know, we should always use VPN, block cookies, maybe use different devices etc. in order to stay anonymous when SE'ing. However, I believe almost everyone pays with a Paypal/bank account/credit card created on their real identity. Doesn't it make it super easy to track a person doing fraud? Is it possible with law enforcement involvement only, or can they do it on their own??

99% of such victim companies won't be wasting their resources on doing what law enforcement's job is.
Unless someone would be raping a company excesively I doubt any company would actually be filing any law suits against common se'rs.

I agree with the above. Look at the Rekk case, the only reason that got as big as it did and as far as it did is because Amazon took it upon themselves to dedicate the resources to investigate the group and gather enough evidence to submit to LE to get a case started. The only reason they did that was because the loss from the single entity that was Rekk was large enough to justify that kind of action.

A lone refunder hitting a wide range of retailers for relatively small amounts flys way under the radar, its not worth it for any single company to allocate resources towards finding them even when its obvious tat SE has actually taken place which when done properly isn't even the case.

Maybe a lift of best op sec is more useful

In Germany, the company most of the time, are involving their in house or external lawyers
These lawyers are not fucking around and will track you down
Or they will just file a police report, with all the information. If you dont have a good OPSEC, its over.

Especially when the company realize, they have gotten a lot of refunds and seeing a pattern. Such as DNA etc.
OTTO, NBB and MindFactory are only a few examples

I always recommend gift cards or prepaid credit cards Wink
If it doesnt go by plan and they are threatening you with law suits or whatever, they got nothing.
Obv, you need to have a good OPSEC!

Buy in your local store, pay cash, redeem and done

This might be dumb but if you pay for a gift card, and your doing refunds, won't the refund just go back into the gift card for that specific store? Unless your using a visa gift card then you can use them anywhere if thats what your saying.,
