I am wondering if buying an iPhone in an apple store and then claiming EB through apple's online support would work? since they wouldn't have the package weighed by a carrier beforehand
has anyone ever tried this, or a similar method?

I don't think it would work as you bought it in an apple store and they'd tell you to go to them.

the closest city with an apple store to me is 3 drive hours away, I could tell them I can't afford the transportation
Also I wouldn't buy it at the store but rather use the pick-up option when purchasing online

I also don't think that it would work, they could direct you to the store and you have talk to the manager and I don't think that he would believe you.
