Supermarket / grocery SE's physical and online, what you got ? - EquitableEngineer - 01-21-2023

I have to say I am partial to the old vegetable switcheroo occasionally where you weigh steaks or some other expensive grocery items as carrots and pay a fraction of the cost - this only works at the self serve checkouts so beware. Its almost the perfect crime because you can go to self serve and scan your 'carrots' right there in front of everyone and the employees without raising any eyebrows, you just have to make sure you are quick when you weigh the 'carrots' initially and not be seen doing it. I dont weigh at the self serve itself but rather in the vegetable aisle where they have those dedicated scales for weighing your veg and printing the little sticker that has the barcode to be scanned. Just slap that baby over the barcode on your steak and enjoy a nice juicy steak for under £0.30. If you are wondering I choose carrots because it is the cheapest option to choose from where I reside.

Would love to hear your tricks for keeping the cost of groceries down

They've put cameras into the self checkouts here, along with an AI that checks if it looks vaugely like what you're scanning is correct. I wasn't trying to perform an SE, but my jacket sleeves covered the camera, and the machine didn't think my corn cobs matched what corn should look like, so the till said to wait for a manager, and they watched my replay, and told me their bad, the machine screwed up. But she definitely saw every move I made, through that video replay, and had I done something stupid, i woulda been caught then and there.

No way thats crazy, i knew about the cameras but not the AI. Good tip. What chain was it ?

I do something similar with donuts. I put like 3 or 4 in a bag and say I only got 1. I know most people are to scared pulling off such a huge scheme were the stakes are so high but hey someones gotta do it. lol

^ Spot on.

You can basically enter any cheap Item of equal weight, and no one would know the difference. Self-serve checkouts are an SE'ers paradise.

Depending on the store and locality you reside, some self-serve checkouts have an employee standing around offering assistance, so be wary of that when punching In the goods.

I circumvent this completely by using the bigger stores where they have dedicated, unmanned scales in the veg aisle where you can weigh the veg and print out a sticker which has the barcode on it. This way when i get to the self serve all i do is scan it and out it on the scales, the employee manning the self serve area can watch you scan it and not know what just happened.

An excellent approach.

Walmart, shockingly. I assume they stepped it up because they're probably the most hit by people trying to scam the self checkout.
