I've just started reading Eragon only 5 days ago and have finished the first book which was really good. Id have to recommend the Discworld series by Terry Pratchet as it is my favourite novel, filled with magic and adventure, definitely a good read!

The blade itself by Joe Abercrombie. Very gritty.
