New Witcher Game Coming Soon - Oni - 03-22-2022

One of my favorite series. A new Witcher game is in the works. It will use Unreal Engine 5. The teaser image shows the emblem of the School of the Cat or Lynx, as opposed to Geralt's School of the Wolf.

CD Projekt has confirmed that a new Witcher game is in development, "kicking off a new saga for the franchise."

The new game will be built using Unreal Engine 5 rather than CD Projekt's REDengine, which the studio said will begin "a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games."

"It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant," CD Projekt said. "We'll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences."

CD Projekt said that the change to the new engine was made to help streamline the development process. "From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership," CD Projekt Red CTO Paweł Zawodny said. "It is vital for CD Projekt Red to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release.

Definitely the right call by CD Project, the Witcher got a lot more exposure through the series and as for cyber punk, I didnt like it at all. I recently replayed Witcher 3 because of its expansions. Right after I downloaded Gwent on Mobile hehe.

Hopefully, they keep the same art style as The Witcher 3. That stuff is timeless and even in 2022, 7 years after it emerged, it is still one of the best-looking games by a dozen miles.

Details on why they are swapping to Unreal Engine 5:

The game is still being made by CD Projekt Red. Hopefully it isn't plagued by the issues 2077 was.

There was speculation the game is in development hell, supposedly untrue:
Quote:Here's one comment I actually wanted to make. I've been looking at the headlines that popped up here and over the Internet and I've seen one that really drew my attention, which is The Witcher 3 next-gen delayed indefinitely, which sounds like the game is in some sort of development hell. I want to say this is not the fact. There's been a lot of insinuations that we're gonna launch in like June next year or something. That's completely not the case, everything we're saying is we have taken the development of the game in-house, The Witcher 3 next-gen is going to be finished in-house. We're evaluating our time, that requires a bit of investigation, that's all we're saying. Nobody's saying the game is delayed in some monumental sort of time gap ahead of us. That's as much as I can say about The Witcher 3 next-gen, but I really wanted to emphasize that fact.

I have a few concerns. One being the switch to UE5. Because of this, the game will definitely have a different feel. I'm not too worried about hardware requirements though, since this game is a good 4 years away. But, apparently Red Engine is hell to use, so I don't blame the devs for wanting a switch. Having a smooth development environment will make a huge difference.

More than half of the original team that worked on the Witcher 3 has now left CDPR. Meaning that less talent will be there to work on 4.

And, in the teaser image the medallion featured is not from any school currently in the series. The medallion is a Lynx. So that means some modification to the story is happening. Hopefully the writers do better than they did on Cyberpunk.

Thank you for this, I wasn't clued in at all.

So, if a lot of the original team isn't there, do they not have other skilled folks who will be working on it in their stead?

I would say so yes. The team who worked on Cyberpunk was talented, I just don't think they were given enough time by the higher ups to use their full potential. Of course, there will be a different team working on the Witcher 4 though.

That being said though, Witcher is a legendary series. It's also CD Projekt's last hope if they want to regain any trust from the community, or even keep the studio alive. They do not want to screw this up.

I'm not sure how soon is soon, but I'm guessing it's at least 3 years away ... In the mean time, I think Witcher 3 remaster is coming out this year ... maybe

Ooo so no pressure then!
