Unreal Engine 5 Revealed - Demo - Oni - 03-14-2022

A demo has been released, showcasing Unreal Engine 5 on the PS5. New game engines typically define what the next few years of games will look like. Impressive, to say the least.

I didn't intend to watch that whole video but yet here we are. Never realized how far behind the film industry the game industry was. Looks like they're catching up

I always like seeing the new engine demos, as they show improvements in rendering tech. We're limited by current rendering technologies and GPUs. A film is not nearly as intensive GPU-wise, as it's essentially flat. A game will render objects from all angles, far and wide.

A bunch of games have already stated they'll be using UE5:

Someone did a remake of Portal in Unreal Engine 5:

Looks impressive.

This is really impressive. It's very easy to wonder why games aren't as graphically epic as films, but when you realise that a film isn't designed to be a 3D interactive environment... it changes things.

I watched the whole video. It was well put together - Laymen's terms for the people like myself, but also technical info for game devs and the like.

I also now really want to play the game in the video.

I think there's also instances where game tech has fed back to the movie industry. It would take me a bit of research to offer an example, though.
