12 Inches of Snow - Ciceniss - 10-08-2021

Got down to the farm yesterday could not crank the tractor. Today after 5 inches of snow over the 7 already on the ground. The two wheeled drive Ford Ranger would not go. Been three days since haying the cows how long can they go without any feed? They are in pretty good flesh. Probable be three or more days until I can feed plus the three I have already missed. All ponds are froze over been quite an experience and about as bad as I have ever experienced here in East Texas.

Six days is too long. Even if they have the body condition, they can't metabolize fat fast enough to get through weather like that without some problems. Is the hay on the same property as the cattle? Can you just let them out to it?

Poor cows, they must be starving.

Is there not any way you can transport at least a minority of food, regardless of what It Is but edible by cows?

My family is in East Texas and i'm looking for land to purchase out there. Very beautiful and peaceful space to be left alone. I didn't know it was snowing this weekend. I'll have to give my dad a heads up he's grabbing some work equipment over there this weekend.

I would imagine your livestock should not go longer than 4-7 days without eating. Is there a heater you could buy for your barn that would help them keep warm and interested in eating. Good luck OP.

My guess is it depends on how much livestock OP owns. Feed can be absolutely too heavy to carry alone without a tractor or truck.

True, but It doesn't need to be done alone, family and friends can help with transportation.

If need be, In small/reduced portions. Some food Is better than no food.

Well if OP is anything like my family, they are likely living alone and far away from family. My pappy lived in a cabin alone and once he passed he gave the property to my dad and uncle. Now my uncle lives out there alone.

East TX is straight up in the middle of nowhere.

It'd be tough on your uncle doing everything alone, particularly If he's an elderly man.

You've made some very valid points. Not everyone has others that they can rely on.

All over the world there is some kind of mess with the weather. In one country there is a major earthquake, in another there is a volcanic eruption that has been going on for over a week, throwing hundreds of tons of ash and smoke into the atmosphere, in Texas it is snowing. It's unbelievable how angry the weather is at us. The question is, for what sins?

It's certainly changed In most parts of the globe.

In my locality, seldom do we experience earthquakes, yet the biggest one hit around three weeks ago. It caused a lot of damage to buildings, but thankfully no one was killed.
