Something About Proxies - sunjester - 06-02-2022

What is a Proxy?
If you don't know the definition of the word proxy then you may not even know how proxies are used online. In real life, a proxy is something that is in-bewteen one thing and another. That's exactly what a proxy server does for you online.

Types of Proxy Servers
There are two types of proxies, Anonymous and Transparent. The difference is simple, an anonymous proxy server will hide your IP and transparent proxies will not. You should also be aware that most proxies are operated for internal networking purposes. For example: if you are at work you may not even know you are connecting through a proxy. Most compentent companies will employ a proxy that filters your web traffic automatically. Like when you can't get on facebook or some other social media sites; this is more than likely a proxy.

There are also cache proxies, these are also employed locally on a network to help speed up traffic and keep the bandwidth low. This is good for people who access internal static sites, it can significantly improve traffic speeds on the local network.

SOCKS Proxies
SOCKS is actually a protocol. SOCKS5 allows for authentication and is quite popular since you need to authenticate to use the proxy.  If you want to see how the data is sent (in network byte order) you can visit this wiki page.

Scanning for Proxies
On my rf.gd website I have scanners that scan the internet and parse proxy servers (it's not working that great right now and needs to be tweaked a bit on the regex's lol). Other websites are doing the same thing, but most are probably scraping proxies from other places, and I'll cover that too. The main ports for proxy servers 8080, 80, 1080, 3128. Keep in mind that proxy servers don't have to use those ports, its always at the discretion of the network admin to determine which port to use. But if your just looking to mass scan for those open ports, you'll find some proxies. I have some bash scripts that use nmap and some unix tools to parse proxies. you can probably find them on this forum but you should check my github that hasn't been updated in forever.

Scraping Proxies
With any web scraping you will need to know regular expressions. You can use software like beautifulsoup or whatever the kids are using now. The best way is to just scrape them yourself.  You can refer to my post here and scrape thousands of proxies. Here are the sites that post scrapes (and its old so it may not even work now).
