Overwatch's McCree Getting Renamed - Oni - 08-27-2021

Looks like McCree is getting a rename in response to the Activision lawsuit. He was originally named after one of the devs, which is being accused of harassment. I've played Blizzard titles over 15 years, but something about changing the names of fan favorites is just yucky. All of a sudden they're marketing on the principles of "inclusivity, equity, and hope"...

Quote:Overwatch's cowboy is getting a new name.

This is Blizzard's latest attempt to salvage its image. The studio is dealing with a lawsuit filed by the state of California in July over employee claims of sexual discrimination and harassment, and its recent public defense was ill-received. The cowboy's namesake was Diablo 4's former lead designer Jesse McCree, who was fired after images showed him inside "the Cosby suite," where female employees reported they were harassed. The announcement comes a day after the Golden State accused the company in an amended complaint of shredding HR documents.

The cowboy McCree is a gun-for-hire loner in Overwatch lore. In-game, one interaction jokingly casts doubt about McCree's first name being Joel, but it was officially Jesse.

And coincidentally they were going to launch incipient content next month that just transpires to get delayed due to this. Hmm...

This seems a bit strange. I get why they're changing the name - Can you imagine the shit fest if they didn't? Equally, changing the name is going to bring more publicity to the problem, too. I don't think it's avoidable. However, I do think a character name change is the least of their problems if they're facing lawsuits regarding shady HR practices.

In this incident, it seems like it's a bit more than "accusations". The guy was fired for misconduct, which you aren't normally able to do without proof, at least, that's how employee law works.

Who knows what's true and what isn't about this employee. I'm a bit tired of the early judgement with other cases like this, though. I think we need to live in a society where we don't point fingers and call someone guilty (permanently) before they've faced any kind of trial. In this case, it seems a bit more solid, but often it's not with cancel culture outcries. I noticed nobody back tracks on their cancelling when someone is found innocent. To me, that speaks of a very dangerous society where you can wreck a life without knowing the truth.

The justice system isn't perfect, but it's better than judgement without trial.

It's not a terrible name imo. I think it feels goofy because that wasn't the name he started with. Everyone would probably have naturally called him "cassidy" without batting an eyelid if that's what he had always been. The description is a little cute but eh. I was peeved when I first read this, but this kind of thing seems to be the new normal in our oversensitive society.
