how would I go about this? I'd preferably like to do this without purchasing it. I was thinking of telling them it's broken and using an SN from craigslist and whatnot, but how would I convince them to send out a replacement first before I box them? and what would I tell them that would warrant a replacement?

If It's under warranty and after going through a few routine troubleshooting steps, you will be asked to return the Item for a refund/replacement.
