dont take my question as aggressive but im so lost on hash posts here.
with hashcat being the free go-to GPU solution to hash cracking and johntheripper being the cpu free go-to solution for cpu hash cracking, why would anyone risk these options? both are hugely popular, tried, tested and always rank highest.
safer, documented, free, time tested.
why would i use these? what am i missing?

Valid point, but variety is the spice of life, my friend.
For example, IDA Pro hands down is an elite debugger/disasm for my hacking projects however sometimes I pull out the 'ol X32/64dbg (which is free) and I can knock out legit a CTF challenge or serial check in 30 mins. Is one better than the other? Both get the job done, but I guess it a matter of comfort.
As for cracking yeah hashcat is def the choice to go but I will run utils like the OP posted in a sandbox once in a while to see what else is out there. There is a lot of virus shit out there so always play safe
