Shanghai's Drone QR Codes - Jiggly - 04-24-2021

I thought this was pretty interesting. China is known for showing off with it's use of drones, one example being their use in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. On Saturday night, hundreds of drones took off into the night sky in Shanghai with a cool light show, ending in the display of a giant QR code in the sky. When the QR code was scanned, it took people to a video game download for Princess Connect! Re: Dive from Bilibili (a Chinese video-streaming company).

While some have been seriously impressed by the display (hey, it's pretty stunning to look at), others have been deeply concerned about what it means for the future:

Code:
Some critics compared it to the ad-filled world of Blade Runner 2049, where massive holographic advertisements compete for people’s attention and constantly nudge them to buy and consume more.

Someone's gonna hack the drones so the QR code redirects to gay porn or something funny like that.

I could easily see this happening. I'm not sure there's been enough of these events to allow for opportunity to hack them... yet.

That, or malware. Somehow it being a Chinese gacha game is funnier, though.

Given It was floating In the sky and particularly the size of It, how was It accurately scanned?

By the drone Itself?

Yeah, whatever I thought it was going to be wasn't a cute little princess gacha. Lol!

I assume if you're far enough away it shouldn't be too hard.

Though, the distance may have an Impact on detecting the QR code.

Knowing the Chinese government they prolly are gonna use it in some sort of way for propaganda purposes. I wouldn't be surprised if there would be drones flying around Beijing that take the shape of Lei Fengs face.

This is so cool, the idea of drones actually using some form of hive mind technology to work as a singularity is so sci fi!
Can only imagine how long it will take before someone finds a way to attack them though :-)

I felt the same way when I first read it. However, apparently QR codes are everywhere in China, for paying for things/ordering etc etc. So, maybe not as likely to be a propaganda thing as we think.

It sounds like people managed it, right? I can't say I've ever attempted scanning a QR code in the sky made of drones, though xD
