Comment n' Critique // Graphic Rant - Jay - 06-09-2013

Mmkay, well someone I'm sure in some way will agree with me and understand my frustration as a fellow graphic artist, designer, etc. What ever the case may be.

First off I'd like to hit THREE major rant points:
  • CnC - Comment n' Critique
  • False Thoughts
  • False Comments
CnC:
When giving comments and leaving feedback you need to be honest, I've seen work from "artists" who have well over a year or more of experience in art or design who still create work that looks like it was done with a gradient map overlay, clipping mask, smudge tool and the text tool, honestly it's quite pathetic to see years of work wasted on crap tutorials found on gaming sites and what I usually see from "artists" here, even though I'm calling them "artists" I don't believe the term fits as I'll hit my point now, with the work being created its utterly ridiculous to see some of the things people say to each other to be kind, or not be hated on due to harsh words. But the sad fact is saying things like "Dude that work is sick as hell, fantastic!" to an "artist" who just opened paint will not help him improve. Be harsh, and be honest.

False Thoughts:
Somewhat tying into CnC, this point hits the mental image put in the mind of those "artists" who see the false CnC you members put up, by telling them their work is fantastic there leaves no reason or room to improve. In their mind they are the best now and you've given them the mindset that their not up to par work is fantastic, congratulations now we have new found elitists who think they will rule the world with Gimp and Paint.NET.

False Comments:
More or less a direct copy or repeat of CnC, you, as in all of you who do this need to buck up and let your nuts swing, say what you want to say, and if you lack experience do not say anything at all, as a season artist and web designer it greatly irritates me to see false comments such as;

"Bro so dope!"

or

"Awesome work, KIU! You have great work man!"

Yes, kind, but not true, directing this at those of you who comment work that you know is not worthy of this gratitude.

Anyways I'm done.

I agree with you but there are a few points I'd like to address in this.

"Be harsh, and be honest."
You don't have to be harsh to be honest. I can easily say, "It looks like a nice piece however you need to do this and that and then make sure you remember this when you tag."

The whole false thoughts idea, I see where you're getting at, but it also helps the member/upcoming designer. Sure they can be a pain in the ass when you're trying to get them to improve, but it also increases their want to learn more and more about graphics which counts in the long run.

"if you lack experience do not say anything at all"
I'd like to disagree with this point. An unexperienced user can easily spot something he/she likes/doesn't like and that can ultimately help the designer. After all, CnC is really just an opinion and not something you have to be a professional to do.

I agree with some points but disagree with some aswell.

I can definitely see how you get irritated with it as I do in fields where I am knowledgeable. I am guilty of being one to commend work that others find not impressive, but its mainly because anything that I can't make I find impressive. I am graphically incompetent so I look at graphics from my perspective. I don't feel it my right to be harsh when the person I am critiquing is doing something I cannot fathom.

But, if its just plain bad, then I will surely say so.

I can understand your frustration because I feel the same way about areas where I lack expertise. Mostly because I find amazing anything that I can't make, I'm guilty of praising work that others find unimpressive. As someone who struggles with visuals, I offer an outsider's viewpoint on them. When the person I am criticizing is acting in a way I cannot understand, I do not feel it is my place to be harsh.
