If you are looking for textbooks you can check shadow libraries (like library genesis or z-library). They specialize in providing academic literature and scientific journals usually hidden behind paywalls.

I've found that .onion libraries are the best way to get PDFs for free. 99% of clear web libraries are hidden behind some sort of endless signup page, or endless advertisement redirects.
I don't have any of the libraries that I use bookmarked on Linux yet, but once I'm in Windows I'll update my reply.

@Drako you don't have to be registered for either of the two libraries I posted, neither you will be forced into looped redirects; they also have everything they offer available for download in pdf (or in some cases other formats as well). The downside is that they mainly provide academic literature and not very much of belles-lettres.

Oh I had no idea z-library or library genesis had clear web link URLs.
Like I said in my first reply, it's hard to come across legitimate PDF libraries.

I use it quite a bit. It has more traditional books like fiction, nonfiction, romance, etc. But you may find what you're looking for since the library is constantly being updated.
