Which Linux OS to play games - ff1ddaf43112 - 02-03-2021
Hi guys,
which Linux OS can you recommend to play games like Steam-Games dbut also old games like WC3 or AoE.
in the past i played with WINE but most of the time it was very disappointing.
Has someone made good experiences with linux and games (directX)? Or is windows still the only option?

steam has gotten better over the years and if the game has Linux support that it would tell you on the store screen and what builds it supports mostly its going to be the top Linux distros ubuntu exc and it never ceases to amaze me why people want to be stupid enough to want to play games on Linux probably for if you have a game that supports it and also optimized for it for that 1% speed boost if you want to be smart and like being able to just buy a game not having to worry if it will work or not do a dual boot set up on your computer Linux/windows and if you dont know how to use bash or dont know how to hack or how to be a server admin then i think you would have no reason to run Linux and windows can run Linux progs so i would say use windows unless you have a real reason to use any other OS.

thank you for your relpy. I am already using dualboot on my computer but i want to kill my Windows machine and that's the reason why i am asking for some ideas. The Steam-games are working (these games which are supporting Linux). But I want to run other games (like WC3, AoE,...) too.
The last 6 months i only worked with Linux (Mint) due to my studies and work. That is the reason why i want to erase the windows partition

haha, theres actually an OS called steamOS. Basically its a linux distro made for using steam. but i think they have cancelled it now or smth. or maybe not, i saw some link to it; here it is! voila! https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/

I've used Debian before, along with Wine and PlayOnLinux. That said, certain games aren't designed to work with Linux at all. I recommend having a separate install of Windows just for your games, with Wine and PlayOnLinux being the alternatives. Ultimately, games and compatibility are the only reason I still use Windows.

What's it like to use? A few years back, I was curious about Linux, but literally stopped being interested the second I realised what a pain it would be for games. 70% + of my time on a PC is running games (it's sad, I know), so that was a mega deal breaker.

I dont use steamOS, so i dont know about that one. but i use blackarch on my laptop, and i dont really use it for gaming, but it isnt really too much of a hassle to play games with wine. steam can be installed on linux, atleast the distro im running, and there are even some games that have support for linux, if you arent gonna run them through the wine emulator.
but i agree with that if youre a gamer, its better to have one separate drivs or SSD with windows for playing games.
