UKs first post-Brexit trade deal with Japan - Jiggly - 09-11-2020

As many of you know, the UK exited the European Union (EU) on the 31st of January 2020. Despite the pandemic, post-Brexit negotiations have been underway. The UK is running out of time for it's transition period out of the EU. While there is already trade ongoing between the two nations, they are signing the very first post-Brexit trade deal, which aims to boost their existing trade by over £15 billion. In the next 15 years, this is expected to result in a 0.07% GDP increase for Britain.

Understandably, this doesn't sound like very much. The reality is... that it's not. It will not fill the gap left by the previous trade arrangements with the EU. However, it was an unusually fast deal, with the Japanese government expecting to pass the deal in January. This is hopefully the beginning of many new deals.

I wonder who else they'll start trade with. I hope the US doesn't become a big trade partner. I'd much rather they not rely more so on them

Why not? They have a "Special Relationship" with the US. We're also allies with them.

What makes you say that? Nothing has actually happened yet.

Sorry I meant to say more Johnsons handling of it was quite lousy

No need to be sorry. Everyone is welcome to any opinion/viewpoint. I was just a little lost as the statement was so broad and we'd barely done anything yet lol. Also, I'm just curious as to why you have that viewpoint? Is there anything in particular Johnson himself has done? Is there something you felt Theresa May did better (or not, if that's the case)?

Everyone is exposed to different news stories, different viewpoints from friends and family.

All I know for certainty is, I am so glad I never went into politics. Regardless of how I feel about the government handling any of this, the reality is that you will never please everyone, and a mass of people will hate you. I don't envy that job one little bit.
