The title explains itself. Downloading some apk's online how do I know they don't have some malware or keylogger etc or something else.

Just use javadecompilers[dot]com/apk to decompile a apk or/and virustotal

Unless you disassemble the file, simply use online virus scanners and traditional antivirus & anti-malware software.

Just upload the file to VirusTotal. It will still give you effective scan results. There may be a few antivirus' that can't scan APKs, but most can.

Mobile security hasn't reached the same level of sophistication as desktops, but I recommend Malwarebytes:
