RE: Recommend a laptop - mothered - 08-27-2020 I won't specifically suggest specs (that's your job- you're well and truly competent), but I do recommend opting for "Acer". I've owned lappies for over three decades, and the likes of Asus & HP, have died multiple times. I'll never touch those manufacturers again, ever. Acer has served me without fail. RE: Recommend a laptop - Pikami - 08-27-2020 I just want to say that I wouldn't recommend Lenovo, I got their Y520 model and it has loads of problems: * Some keyboard keys stop working randomly * SSD is overheating * The battery barely holds for 2h * It's all plastic and feels like a cheap mashine RE: Recommend a laptop - Jiggly - 08-27-2020 Forgive me, I can't recommend much by way of laptops (I could review the ones I've owned/used in the last 5 years at best). Your uses are almost identical to mine, which makes me curious, what kind of graphic design are you doing? Are you using PS or another program? I've used/owned several Lenovo laptops and really love them. However, I've had a couple issues with them once they became 3-4 years old or more. The Y510p (I think?) I own is second hand and the screen has started to have issues. I'm wondering if it's thermal damage. In the UK it's a bitch to get that fixed, as their repair service is in Germany. One thing to think about. Other than that, it was a dream to use. To back up Mothered's experience, a relative of mine is using an Asus (they weren't given a choice for laptops) and they've had nothing but issues with it. Keyboard gone to crap (they now use an external keyboard), the device makes a horrendous noise (the fans), the AMD gfx card doesn't function properly in games and the battery might as well not exist. As a matter of Interest, what make Is the SSD? RE: Recommend a laptop - Pikami - 08-27-2020 (08-27-2020, 04:51 PM)mothered Wrote: As a matter of Interest, what make Is the SSD? It's a wds512g1x0c NVME, the temperature is about 50C while I'm working on stuff, get's to arround 70C while gaming, doesn't get any hotter than 70C cause windows just gives up at that point and throws a blue screen RE: Recommend a laptop - mothered - 08-28-2020 (08-27-2020, 08:40 PM)Pikami Wrote: It's a wds512g1x0c NVME, the temperature is about 50C while I'm working on stuff, get's to arround 70C while gaming, doesn't get any hotter than 70C cause windows just gives up at that point and throws a blue screenIt makes sense with Western Digital. In terms of older drives, I've had many WD external HDDs die and ever since then, I've stuck with Samsung for SSDs. They function very well Indeed. RE: Recommend a laptop - Losi - 08-28-2020 I have found great success with the dell XPS series of laptops. It's my opinion, but finding replacement parts is easy and the used market has decent options. The 2013-2016 XPS laptops are a great price on the used market. Great for school and business use. Rugged too. Thanks for the input. I'll try to look more into Acer. She likes to draw on the phone and I'd say she's pretty good using only fingers and a small screen. I'd like to let her practice more on a proper drawing tablet and proper software like Illustrator. I may also use it for occasional gaming or browsing and research. (08-28-2020, 06:16 AM)Losi Wrote: I have found great success with the dell XPS series of laptops. Although I still need to do more research since I have no idea how much it should cost, or if there are any better ones. Aw that's actually incredibly sweet. I hope the XPS works out. If she enjoys drawing - I also recommend ClipStudio. It goes on sale a couple times a year for a great price, and it's a one time purchase. I love using it. |
