[NDS]: Third-Party Cartridge such as R4s are useless & Memory Pit Exploit - miso - 06-21-2020
People that have a Nintendo DS normally also have a Third-Party Cartridge to play ROMs on their DS, this allows the player to play games he/she woudn't have been able to play otherwise, they're normally pretty cheap, ranging from $5 up to $80
however, some of these third-party cartridges have these following problems:
- Timebomb | This causes the cartridge to disable itself/self-destruct after a period of time
- Poor manufacturing quality | This can cause some small part of the cartridge to easily break
- Malicious code | This can for example brick a console, or prevent other third-party cartridge to not be usable
There a few exploit for the Nintendo DS that allowed ROM booting, such as ugopwn, but i will only talk about the Memory Pit exploit since it is the one im most confortable with
The Memory Pit Exploit got discovered in May 2019, by swapping out a file named pit.bin with an exploited one, the user will be able to boot .NDS files on their console.
The exploit uses a vulnerability under the Nintendo DS Camera App, allowing it to run unsigned code
Advantages of using Memory Pit:
- The camera app is built-in with all Nintendo DSis
- It works under the latest firmware (1.4.5)
- It is easy to install (you just need an SD card)
Disadvantages of using Memory Pit:
- You cannot use the classic Nintendo DS nor the Nintendo DS Lite, only the Nintendo DSi & DSi XL are affected by the exploit since they're the only versions of the DS that have a built-in camera with a camera app
