Argos SE idea. - umpal00mpa - 12-22-2019

Hypothetically if I bought a phone in argos and replaced it with a cheaper version that looks the same when I return it.. The person at the till will probably not know the small details of what the more expensive phone looks like anyway. So I'd assume they would refund me then and there. However what happens then? Are there people in the warehouse afterwards that would report it and would I get away with it if I say it wasn't me?

Stating the obvious, purchase with cash and not a credit card.

If they request for ID, well, you know what to do.

This does not work.

Just at your one or at all? Could. You elaborate a bit? Whenever I return anything to argos they just take the box and refund me.. Barely ever even look inside

On what grounds was your SE declined?

It was not declined. I just made a dry run to learn how to reps deal with this situation. I simply purchased a circa £1000 iPhone in cash from Argos. Opened the packaging very carefully and inspected the phone. Repackaged the original real phone perfectly and a few hours later took it back to an alternate store for a refund. Got all my cash back no problems, but a manager was requested by the rep, they then both inspected the item very professionally. Very carefully opened the outer film packaging to check it was real and not a copy. Once they realized it was real i got my cash refund no problems.

I also had to provide a postcode and house number when they gave me my cash back.

The only thing i could not tell, was whether they attempted to power on the phone due to the angle they stood at. However I do not see why they would not try this. Therefore I have to undertake further research to understand the procedure that they would follow if the iPhone happened to be "out of battery".

Good work.

It's always good practice to perform a "practice run" prior to the SE, namely when dealing with a new company. As such, you know what to expect with their claims management process.

Nice work. Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna try it with air pods on amazon though. I'll bet they don't check. And I'm pretty sure they sell on refunds in those big mixed tech pallets..

RE: Argos SE idea. - umpal00mpa - 12-25-2019

Also I've returned a used lawnmower cost 100quid that was completely shitty and dirty and they didn't even open the box.. I also kept the battery just to check if they would care. Got money back no issue. It probably depends on the person on the till. And also a 1k iPhone is not what I would choose to test on. Its probably the most obvious thing they would check not least because of the big price tag.

RE: Argos SE idea. - twistacheese - 12-25-2019

iPhone swap with cheap Chinese copy scam has probably been done to death by now, that's why they would be wise to it, in general they don't care, especially if you go in on a busy day when they don't have much time to inspect things and just want to process you as quick as possible.
