Getting minimal, how to suck less - Cr3aTor - 09-29-2019
[ Some Words Before I Begin ]
Before I begin enumerating all sorts of CLI programs I want to make some things clear.
I'm mostly about getting things done quickly and efficiently, therefore I prefer running programs in the command line JUST because it makes my life easier. Not because I'm a hipster that thinks the terminal is cooler and nerdier. CLI programs are good, but they have their limitations. Like most of the things, terminals are good for some tasks and useless for others (e.g browsing the web, reading pdfs, viewing videos, etc).
Now, with all of that being said let's get into it !
[ Main Programs ]- Window Manager --- i3-gaps ( This is probably the most used wm out there, and it does it's job mostly. However I will most probably migrate to dwn/bspwn since I've used i3 for quite some time now and besides that it lacks of some features. But overall it's a wonderful window manager and I would definitely recommend it)
- Terminal Emulator --- st ( A suckless utility that it's quite small in size and gets its things done, it also supports image previews and much more )
- File Manager --- ranger ( A simple python terminal-based file manager that can be very customizable, supports image previews, pdf previews and quite frankly you can make it do whatever you want since you can map keys to scripts)
- Web Browser --- qutebrowser ( A keyboard-based browser with minimal GUI written in python. I use it because I really like how you can map keys to scripts, it handles downloads, bookmarks and quickmarks pretty nice and it has a search engine function that I simply love)
- Text Editor --- vim ( I don't think I need to introduce it, but I use it mostly because of it's scripting features, customizable bindings and themes, the wonderful plugins and much more )
- Music/Audio Player --- mpd with ncmpcpp ( mpd is and audio player that has a server-client architecture. It plays audio files, organizez playlist and maintains a music DB + much more. Ncmpcpp is a ncurses based MPD client and I mostly use it for playing/managing music
- Media Player --- mpv is nice because you can also play streams, yt videos and basically any form of video/audio media by only giving it the URL/filename.
- RSS Reader --- newsboat ( Well this one is quite explanatory, but it's particularly nice because you can just subscribe to the youtube channels that you only want to see, therefore you can save a lot of time and data, just by the simple fact that you never have to visit the site. Besides that, you can subscribe to blogs, news, twitter, I think you can do this even with sinister
)
- Torrent Client --- qbittorrent ( Just an open-source torrent client)
- Image Viewer --- feh/sxiv (feh is a lightweight but powerfull image viewer that can alsa manage desktop wallpapers, sxiv is very similar)
- Image Editing --- GIMP ( Photoshop, but open-source and more awesome if you ask me. I also use imagemagick sometimes for little modifications)
- Status Bar --- Polybar ( A fast, simple and easy to use status bar. This is also highly customizable and can be modified with custom script (I have one that shows me if i'm connected to a VPN, Tor for example). You should definitely take a look at this status bar and the config files of other users)
- Excel-like Spreadsheets --- sc-im ( I use this when I need a visual representation, but I mostly use python scripts/vim to edit csv files)
- PDF Viewer --- zathura ( Minimal, highly customizable and functional document viewer with vim-like keybindings)
- Writing Documents --- I mostly use LaTeX to write documentations, books, CVs, articles and basically anything that needs to be a pdf. In order to compile them more easily I have a bash script that does that for me in vim ( Same for quick preview/update ) )
- IRC Client --- weechat ( A terminal-based IRC client. It also supports plugins, and it's highly customizable)
[ Wait, there is more ]- dmenu --- A fast and lightweight dynamic menu for X. I also use this for a lot of my scripts (e.g prompt user if he is sure to shutdown/reboot, connect to wireless, etc)
- dunst --- Lightweight replacement for notification-daemons. It allows you to customize the look and feel of your notifications
- compton --- A compositor for X that let's you give a nicer look and feel to your terminal (e.g transparency, shadows, etc)
- Gtop --- System monitoring dashboard in terminal
- fish --- A friendly interactive shell. I also use oh-my-fish for easier customization, icon support, powerstatusbar, etc. What it's kinda annoying it's that fish has a completely other syntax than bash. But overall I love every aspect of it.
- youtube-dl --- Download youtube videos, thumbnails, description, metadata, and much more. This tool is just awesome, you can implement it very easily with you other scripts. For example I use it to download videos/music/pdf's/images more easily just by pressing <windows-key>+D.
- yay --- AUR package manager
[ I think that's enough ]
Even if there are a lot more tools and configurations I didn't talk about, I am going to end this here. I really hope that I helped you and showed something new, whatever that is.
I'm going to say that this took a while to write, so give me some feedback to see what you guys think about this kind of threads. I would really love to share a lot more about how to configure your own distro.
Regardless, thank you for taking the time to read this and good luck in whatever you're doing. Cheers !
Note: sorry if there are any typos, I'm pretty tired so please let me know if anything said was not clear enough. Thanks !

Good list of applications, personally used vim and GIMP (which was less useful than Photoshop). Used LaTeX when I was in Computer Science, as well.

This is a really neat list. I'm part hipster, part efficiency honestly. I like CLI for some things, but for other there is a need for a GUI. I'll definitely be using some of these applications.
