What exactly are you hoping to SE? It's a really broad subject. A few members have posted some good e-books , I'll keep my eyes out for them. As for methods , that relates to my first question : what do you want to gain from SEing?

Here's one I found recommended by @MasonXO (pdf linked by @mothered . Gave me a much deeper understanding of potential things a good social engineer can achieve and gave me a broader view of the subject.

The best way to start off is with food companies. Once you are learning the basics of SE'ing you will slowly begin to notice that all SE are similar to food stuff.
Once you've gained confidence you can then start to work your way up to the likes of logitech which are really easy to do. Then from there you can then begin to gain confidence to try harder ones later.
The most important part of SE is the formula. You must stick with it and can't change it mid way. You must have a plan on how you are going to formulate it.
When you begin don't expect success all the time. For myself I've had failures aswell. Now that's not a bad thing it's a learning experience and with each fail you are learning.
When it comes to methods ect I don't really follow them. I use it as a guide to help me plan my attack.
You will get there if you put the time and effort in to it

There are no hard and fast rules, everyone differs with their capacity In exploiting the human firewall.
I suggest starting with gaining a good understanding of how every SE method works, the pros and cons and how each one Is applied effectively.
