With the wrong item method, do you put the cheap product in the expensive product box, and say the item was wrong, or do you say different product was sent altogether, completely different item number on the box etc

It can be a wrong Item In the correct box, or both the Item & box being Incorrect.
It's best to opt for the latter (Item & box). This gives the Impression as though the warehouse made a picking error when dispatching, rather than a manufacturer's mistake.
