Do Amazon really fall for this? Buying a £500 phone and saying you received a similar branded phone which cost £300ish less?

Definitely- I've yet to fail.
The wrong Item doesn't have to be anything similar. Any "stock" Item that's around the same size and weight, will suffice.

Are you 'stealthed' in the term that if they ever 'checked' the returned item, it wouldn't link back to your real name/address? I would assume it's a bad idea to do this with authentic details?
edit: Although I guess if they did send you the wrong item, it's your word against theirs and there is no proof that you've defrauded them, even with authentic details.

The wrong Item Is a "stock" (Inventory) Item, not something random you've decided to return.
As far as they're concerned, the warehouse picked, packed and dispatched an Incorrect Item.

i souldnt use the you received a 300 different phone method u may have to return a 300 phone then you out of pocket .
use a low value item similar weight
for example my ps4 i told them i received 3 tubes of colgate toothpaiste , refunded withing 10 minutes of chat

Depending on the model, the PS4 weighs between 2.1-2.8kg.
The maximum weight for Colgate toothpaste (net weight) Is 190g. Multiply that by 3, Inclusive of the packaging, and It equals around 600g. How Is the weight difference justified?

Seems like some people are a little bit reckless and risk being 'caught out'. I suppose it depends on what person scans in it the warehouse and looks at the details.

It's not that.
They will cross-reference the carrier to establish the weight on consignment. If It was delivered as per the weight of the PS4 (which It would have), then the toothpaste wouldn't have been dispatched.

Got you. Thanks for that information. Consignment weights and how companies operate with such things are definitely on my list to learn about.
