I would give it a google first. Find a plan which suits you best, some people would rather it be more cost effective than fast etc, so everyones opinion will be different. It's really up to you to decide what works for you.

Good luck in your quest for a VPN, there are quite a few out there so grab a coffee and google away.

Does astrill work for Linux as well? if it doesn't, what do you recommend as a good VPN for Linux

Any VPN service that supports OpenVPN.

nVPN.net is a cheap one.

TOR is not even close to a VPN.
If you want to conceal your IP address from all running applications and webpages a VPN would be optimal.
TOR is a relay system, it will not mask your connection for anything other than what's open in the TOR browser, unless you're on *nix.

Don't you mean a VPN is not even close to TOR?

If you really would to conceal your IP address then Tor is obviously what you'd choose. Tor has at least 3 hops/server around the world which you will be routed through. You can even run another tor instance onto it, I saw a set up that involved 9 instances. A vpn is only one hop, this makes it easier for the government to get to you by eg requesting logs, requesting VPN ISP logs, force vpn to put in a backdoor, force vpn to do live monitoring, hack into the vpn, hack into the vpn ISP etc.

This means that a VPN would have less steps for the feds to go to able to get to you, and they'd have more steps to go through to get to you through tor. The harder to track the better anonymity right? That's only logical sense.

What I'm saying is that you're wrong on all aspects in your reply. Tor gives more anonymity than a vpn, saying otherwise would possibly mean that you're chaining at least 3 vpns together (However vpn doesn't have perfect forward secrecy or plausable deniability. Besides they'll probably keep financial records of your purchase etc).

But, if you value your privacy more than anonymity then indeed a vpn would be the best choice! Why? Because VPN uses stronger encryption, yeah I know tor uses layered ssl (That's at least how I've understood it) but the vpn encryption cannot be striped like it's being done on TORs exit nodes.

Privacy protects your data, anonymity protects you. VPN gives your privacy, Tor gives you anonymity. And it doesn't look like you've done any closer research to TOR either. When you say "it will not mask your connection for anything other than what's open in the TOR browser, unless you're on *nix." is 100% false, and sorry for being rude but this have to be one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard in my lifetime.

The browser itself is not the software connecting or giving you access to TOR. Tor browser is a tweaked version of Firefox. And there's a background program called Tor which run on localhost (127.0.0.1:9050 to be exact). To anonymize any other traffic than web browsing then simply change the proxy settings to 127.0.0.1:9050, if you want to use tor with skype; change proxy settings, if you want to use Tor with irc; change the proxy settings, if you want to route all traffic through tor; Set up firewall rules to only allow 127.0.0.1:9050! This works for all operating systems and not just for linux.

Bottom line, you're wrong and I couldn't ignore it so I'm correcting it  Btw, sorry for necrobumping a thread from 2013!

No, Tor is not the only "tool" and Tor is not so reliable because of NSA routers and exit nodes that might be controller by "not-so-honest" people.

If you want to know more about VPN just search the forum or Google. This is quite an old post and it's not appropriate to ask this here.
