As the rest have said a tattoo is a personal choice I've been thinking of getting one for a while myself but don't know what to get. If you are getting a sleeve though my one piece of advice would be to get something that can be covered by a shirt for job interviews as a lot of cultures still have a bad stigma attached to them and it may go against you for certain companies.

It will, and yes, that is what I'm "afraid" of :/

Having a tattoo is fashionable but it can turn out to be a poor choice when you're trying to build a stable carrier in ascending order or you travel a lot abroad.

The shirt may help you by covering the tattoo during job interviews but it's a bad solution. You forget about maybe the most important rule of job interviews - you should never lie or conceal something. People don't like surprises, especially the unpleasant ones. Employers don't hesitate to terminate contracts because of such things. For example, once hired you may decide going to work with a T-shirt with a short sleeve, exposing your body modification, because your company allows wearing such clothes, recommends it or even requires it from its employees (as part of dress code). Terminating the contract of a new employee is very easy and completely legal for whatever reason, thanks to the use of "test periods" by firms (usually long enough; in my country they're 6 months long).

Many companies have non-visible-inking policy. This policy usually targets the body modifications which are done on hands, face or neck.

Having a tattoo can be consider as an asset in some industries. For examples, the ones which targets young people as customers. But it is generally true, that having a tattoo is a taboo when your job position is a customer-facing role. Honestly, it's very difficult for me to recall a job which doesn't have a customer-facing element today.

The anti-tattoo discrimination does exists. It is so serious issue that many people want protection under employment law against it. I will give you an example with UK. Today, every fifth Briton has a tattoo. The number of them which complain they encounter problems on their jobs because of their ink is constantly rising. The UK law allows managers to refuse hire someone on the basis they have a tattoo.

The argument that you should be equal to the next person with CV, because both of you can do the job, can't be considered a stable one. The firms has the right to decide who represents them. An organization that wishes to project professional image and shows that its clients are important and treated well, usually ban tattoos because you've never know if your employee's body art is offending or displeasure to a customer. It's true even when the tattoo is something harmless as a butterfly, a flower or a name.

If you travel abroad and you've a visible body art you can face problems on cultural basis.

I have a small collection of tattoos. Think wisely though before going ahead with your choosen design and location. But at the end of the day, if you're happy, it's your body, your choice. Never let others dictate your decisions.

I'm a fan of tattoos. I've got a few myself, and have plans for several more. Some have more meaning than others, but they all tell a story, even if it doesn't make sense to a random person looking at them.
