RE: Do you think water is wet? - Inori - 01-28-2018

On a molecular level, one could argue that one H2O molecule is made "wet" by those around it (and in turn makes those around itself "wet"), because there's no clear distinction as to when groups of H2O molecules become "water" instead of individual pieces.

I agree that in the macroscopic lens, ours, it makes sense to say that water doesn't make itself wet, that sounds like a logical fallacy waiting to happen.

I don't know, I'm high.

Neither are molecules, they are atoms. H20 is the molecule.

So if that's the case, why can't each individual water molecule being touched by another h20 molecule qualify as wet? If you're talking about a singular molecule of h20 being wet or not, then I'd argue no, but water isn't just 1 molecule.

You're also forgetting the fact that other liquids can make something wet as well, e.g. oil. So if oil does not mix with and is less dense than water (floats on top of), does having oil on water make the water wet?

I'm not forgetting, that aligns with what I'm saying. The water would be wet with oil. The ambiguity is the language we are using, the interpretation of what's happening. The water would be wet with oil and with water itself, from my interpretation of "wet"

I've enjoyed reading all viewpoints.

Just as an open statement and not relative to water per se, what makes wet- "wet?". What defines wet as being "wet?". Why Is wet classed as "wet?". If this can be determined, then perhaps we may have a better understanding why water Is/Isn't wet.

Wet is a serious thing and it can not be confused or used in the same sentence as water.
William Shakespeare once said, "Men build houses, cats climb in trees, but water is not wet"
So does it all make a little bit more sense to you guys?
Just follow your hearts guys, water is the key to worldwide peace.
Terrorists shooting, blowing, stabbing up people all around the world, only because their religion tells them water is wet (dont believe me? go fuck yourself).. all these men just need one thing, that one leading voice saying, "oneeeeee hundreddddd and eighhhhhhtyyyyyy waterisnotwet".
So unite people, spread the word, fuck your underaged nephew, stab your mother, blow up a kindergarten, and who knows, one day we can find the eternal worldwide peace. You can't blame others for saying that water is wet, it is the eternal worldwide brainwash that is going on. But we know the actual truth and if we spread the word, we can achieve great, GREAT things.

Precisely my reaction.

On-topic, water is not wet, water makes things become wet.

Definitions as they stand in many dictionaries align to that. But yes, everything is hinging on what the word "wet" actually means.

This is a very non-extreme example of why ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or ISO (International Standards Organization) should make an official dictionary, so we won't have definition-based debates.
More extreme examples are legal arguments, and the whole transgender debate.

Wait, you don't have a nationally recognized dictionary? Though, keep in mind, even if you did, your English dictionary wouldn't necessarily match the dictionary definitions from other English speaking countries. I think we just have to accept that language itself isn't perfect or that restricted. Words change meaning over time, and new words are created all the time. The ability to interpret in more than one way gives us more freedom in how we communicate.

AFAIK we do not have one.  Sure, but we would have somewhere to point to, and we can have standardized stuff.
