Uh, thanks. Try to stay on topic though.

You have 2 ways to start.  The soft route, and the touch route... Neither sound too bad, right? (btw, I came up with the names)
  • The soft route is called the soft route because it involves more software.  It is usually started with a Raspberry Pi, Linux, and maybe Python
  • The touch route is called so because it involves things you can actually touch... You can't touch software.  It is usually started with an Arduino and some electronics parts.

Spoiler: THE TOUCH ROUTE
Learn to code in an embedded language.  Arduino (everyone uses this), Espurino (Pls no JS), eLua (Lua is good for beginners), Scratch for Android (don't do this unless you are 5)

Make sure your microcontroller is compatible with the language you chose.

In this tutorial, we will be learning Arduino.

Now, play around with some hardware.  Get a breadboard, jumper wires, resistors, LEDs, etc.  Or just get an electronics kit.
Next, follow some tutorials or read books for projects:
Congrats, you made it!  Now you should make a few projects by yourself.  REMEMBER: SEARCH ENGINES ARE YOUR FRIENDS

Spoiler: THE SOFT ROUTE
Learn to use Linux, and learn to code in a scripting language like Lua (good for beginners), Python (Also good for beginners), or Node.JS (pls no js)

Get a SBC (single board computer), I recommend a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone Black:
Read some tutorials and books:
Congrats, you made it!  Now you should make a few projects by yourself.  REMEMBER: SEARCH ENGINES ARE YOUR FRIENDS

But, after starting one, you will eventually need to gain knowledge that is only in the other route...
(@Dopewaffle This is good for youSmile
Here is an IoT book that combines both: https://www.amazon.com/Internet-Things-Do-Yourself-BeagleBone/dp/0071835202

One last thing: Trust me, it's not as hard as you think it is.  This applies to both routes.
And... The final thing: Avoid CodeAcademy... It is slow and it sucks.

Good luck with your future electronics projects!

That's some pretty good info man. Although I've never used a lot of that stuff to complete an SE I can only imagine how much thought went into all that and what it really takes to gain the skill set to use all of those things. I appreciate that reply on my thread though!

Just read the rules and it seems pretty straight forward. I'm not really sure what my methods would sell for exactly but I know I've gotten some very expensive and re-sellable products from it so I may give it a shot once I get to be more reputable on the forum.

Thanks! It's pretty cool to see it all come alive and be able to use it without paying the $2,000 price tag a lot of others pay for the same thing.

I'm also looking for automation products but with all the fake reviews on Amzon lately you don't know who to trust really.
