No, everyone just stuck to the Skype chats instead of IRC, probably because most everyone on this forum is on Skype anyway. The IRC chans would always be dead AF.

A shoutbox was In effect quite a few years ago: https://sinister.li/Thread-Shoutbox?highlight=shoutbox

I've never been In favor of a shoutbox on any forum. It may well be fine at the beginning, but In my experience, It tends to lose Interest shortly after It's Implemented.

As the forum grows in size there are more people to be on IRC... For a while a few friends and I did an 'intro to writing a jailbreak' class on IRC and it did very well. I am thinking maybe we could do some community teaching on IRC..And for those who missed it, post the logs in a separate forum. But it's a good way to design interactive tutorials.

I would vote against both an IRC and a shout box. They decrease the post count making the forum look dead, and stops other people joining. For example, instead of someone creating a thread asking a question, they ask in the IRC/Shoutbox, it gets answered and you miss out on a thread with good information and then someone else looking for the exact same thing won't find a thread and probably won't ask in the IRC and just leave the forums.

My suggestion with IRC was to keep it restricted to what we currently use Skype for and discontinue the Skype groups. As far as questions go I wanted to see some interactive classes be done over IRC and have the logs be posted to the forums afterwards.

I gave a shoutbox a try last night. If I can fix the visible bugs, we can use it.

I'd say you're right, except I'm not sure about that. I've ran the forum 3 years and I've found that chats/shoutboxes only improve the community. The biggest issue, instead, lies with the security/efficiency of shoutboxes. Generally shoutbox plugins are wonky and I find myself wasting a lot of time just fixing issues. We've had a Skype chat for at least 2 years and it's normally about as active as the site.

The stuff discussed in the chat is normally too LQ for a thead anyways:

Despite the thread, a lot of people don't want one. The one I tested was pretty buggy.
