Why do most of you prefer Linux over Windows 7? Is Linux better for programming/hacking? Also, I read that Linux is free, is that still true?

Why do most of you prefer Linux over Windows 7? Is Linux better for programming/hacking? Also, I read that Linux is free, is that still true?
