depends very much.
You could program on-the-go, but it's very true otherwise - however you could have a job that allows you a good quantity of holidays, or something similar...

I'm not quite sure what my parents expect for my future anymore, but when I was really young they wanted me to have a good, well paying, stable career as a Doctor or a Veterinary. I was on board with it for a few years, enjoying the idea of being a vet, but then when I was around 9 or 10 I started to get into animation and I enjoyed it a lot. I also got into Go-Karting. At that point I started thinking about being a Formula 1 driver or animating cartoons for big companies, Formula 1 driver was obviously unrealistic, so that's straight out the window, and animating, well it was fun as a hobby, but I lost a lot of interest in it after a couple of months, so that was that. Back when I was a kid I also once mentioned being a game developer as a possible career for me, and if I recall correctly my parents were quite annoyed, which is funny considering that's what I plan to do now. I don't know what my expectations in life are, because I have no idea how things will play out, but my dream would be to make my own successful indie games, and have them become successful enough that I can build it into a decent sized games company, I don't care about being EA size huge, but something like Remedy Games sort of size would be perfect, and to then release amazing and high quality AAA games under my own games company. That's the dream anyway. Oh, and also to maybe make a few million over time so I can finally live somewhere that isn't shit.

Oh I know exactly where you're coming from there. As a kid they always only wanted me to become something with really high pay such as a Vet or Doctor, and in the last few years have suggested multiple times many other jobs that I know I would hate just because they give a high salary. The way I see it though, I'd rather fail as GameDev than be a success at something I hate.

//EDIT: Typo.

Do you know whether one of your parents wanted to be a doctor/vet? That's something I've heard happens - parents wanted to be something, and now try to accomplish that dream in their children
Also, GameDev isn't a badly payed job, if you manage to land a game that's successful to at least some degree.

Well, my mum wanted to be a paramedic, and as far as I know my dad wanted to be an electrician, which he is, so I don't think that's it. I think they just seemed to be a little over obsessed with me getting a job just because it was stable and had very good pay when I was young. And yeah, I plan to hopefully go to Uni for GameDev (There's some real great Uni's geared towards it in the UK - In one of them, 100% of people who passed the class now work in the games industry) and either using those skills to start up myself professionally, or to work for another game studio whilst doing my own indie projects on the side.

That can be a bit deceiving, since a lot of gameDevs freelance (or at least compared to some other professions)

I like your idea of making indie games - you might wanna check out steam greenlight and steamplay. If you wanna get a headstart ^^

Yeah, but I mean like for game companies. It was showing videos of them all talking about working at different places, Sony, Sega, etc. And yeah, my dev skills are far from up to scratch as things stand, but I plan to keep trying and keep working hard until I can make some great games, and have thought for a long time steam greenlight seems to be the way to go once I've got a game made.
