Dealing with a backlog, don't worry about it.

While recovery is totally possible, I need to emphasize that the forum is probably going to have to compromise in some form. Whether people prefer looser content restrictions or the cosmetic .LY TLD needs to be discussed. The forum exists because of our members and their contributions, not what some 3rd world registrar allows. Likewise, it's not 2015 and we cannot allow everything. All about balance.

I'll try to give everyone a chance to give input, if people still want to stick around.

I don't know what you mean by "general use", but what they allow has changed significantly over the past 1-2 years. We had no suspensions across 2012-2024. Why that changed, I cannot say. But people are going to need to decide whether .LY matters more than freedom of content. Obviously I'll do what I can to get the domain re-activated, but I am not entirely convinced sticking with .LY overlaps with what the forum really wants.

IMO, I think its better to know what kind of content is restricted first. The sinister.li name is too cool. 😎

That would require a response, but their restrictions could be as tight as limiting NSFW and "Hacking" content. Which people may not want. The domain is nice, but it's not that nice.

I'm talking to older members and I'm very much in line with doing what's best for the forum. We can always buy a nicer domain later, but I want to make sure we stay online.

I'm good with anything as long as we're online. If there's no response then it may be best to keep .li

So, full transparency and a bit long winded...

I'm still talking with the registrar. They are not giving any information on why it was taken down. I have yet to receive a reply about what caused the shutdown, but they are conflating the forum's current existence (and past suspension under NekoElf) with noncompliance. They have not named which policy was violated or why this happened originally. While I'm aware we've always operated in the "grey", this wasn't an issue for 10+ years. I know NekoElf allowed a fair bit more than I do, but their new policies may still be much stricter than what I intend to allow either. Libya is in Muslim territory and while they had a poor history of enforcement, that may no longer be the case.

I asked for a proposal of remediation and asked if it was possible for us to remove sections or content to abide and re-activate the domain. They have forwarded us to higher administrative contacts, which haven't replied yet. My opinion is that we might need to get comfortable with the new domain or alternatives, if that's the new reality. I'll continue following up and we'll keep sending out mass mails. As always, we can adapt our policy within reason but that goalpost could always move again in the future. My personal stance is that changing domains is a worthwhile consideration, simply because I value freedom of speech and .LY might not allow that. On paper, even warez/NSFW contact are against TOS.

I won't give up and we'll stay online, regardless of what form we take.

It's nice to see that you're back online! Thought about this forum many times over the years, and thought I'd finally come back and start contributing.

I hope you're all well!

Yup. We've got a whole rolodex of backup TLDs now.
