I personally don't believe a comp-sci major is all that important and one could progress a lot quicker pursuing other forms of learning that would actually prepare them better for a job. It's fine you've gotten no schooling and trust me, the grass isn't greener. I've also edited the OP because I remembered something else I meant to add, and that is the importance of math. RE: My Advice for Computer Science Students - Mr.Kurd - 07-22-2017 Thank you my friend. I wanna talk about this rule: (DO utilize your professors!) I had a friend who was asking me at lessons a years ago, I always ask him to ask teacher instead me but he didn't. I decide not to answer his questions, so I didn't answer his questions for two months, he started asking teachers .In Kurdish we have a rule saying: (Do not fish for him, but teach him how fishing.) In terms of "knowledge", I certainly agree. There's nothing I can't do (via my own volition), that schooling can do better. From an employment standpoint, unfortunately you can't prove your worth on par with a certified piece of paper. I'm glad he was finally able to open up to his professor. Regardless if the professor shares the same info you would have given him, it's useful to get closer with your teachers and develop a relationship. It'll help with grades and opportunities beyond. I think the CS industry is the most forgiving and has made the best steps for allowing people with our without a degree to show their worth. You can find many startups and modernized tech companies these days that honestly don't care if you have a college degree and I think that's a great thing. Other industries aren't so forgiving, though. At that age, you don't always know the right questions to ask or what to check for.I was very clueless when picking a college at the time. I was 18 (pretty dumb) and fresh out of high school. I definitely didn't know the right questions to ask. ._. You're welcome! Although, never be afraid to make an application for a job you're not sure you're qualified for. I've recently been meeting with some high-ups at various higher education institutions, and when they tell the stories about how they've got into high end jobs, they all seem to say that they applied for jobs even if they weren't sure. The worst that can happen? You could always say no to it.

It's just a matter of being selective when applying with such companies. |
