NordVPN is a good VPN.
It provides VPN+Tor, Double VPN and a huge range of locations across the globe.
I would recommend NordVPN, over any commercial VPN.

I recommend you use a VPS, its much safer and you can use it for other services such as file storing.

Safety more depends as the datacenter it's being hosted ins network and data privacy agreement. Plus, if you don't know how to set up a VPN safely and properly, you could host a 'leak' or something wrong, risking you or your servers' safety,
Though, I do agree that you can use it for more than only a VPN.

no dns leakage, no trust needed and its free.
regarding remote file storage, maybe proton-mail would be the best solution, they have a excellent privacy policy and even if that were not the case you can use stenography and AES-256 encryption for your data.
