I'm not a judgemental person, but if you do things that are outside the norm, or things that wont be accepted by the general population, you invite ridicule, prejudice, hate, etc. It's the same as if someone were to start hollering in a library because they have tourettes or something. Its human nature to think differently of them. It's simply how are brains are hardwired. It's evolution. Different or in-ordinary means danger to our base instincts, and we react to it.

While I think it's terrible for people to beat up others for reasons other than self protection. I don't think this should be a hate crime. Hate crimes are when a person is motivated to attack someone for something they can't control such as race gender and so on. People who alter their bodies with tattoos, gauges and implants under the skin, like this guy's horns, are something a person can decide to have or not have. So while I don't agree with people attacking him, it's also not a hate crime just plain and simple assault.

This. So much this.

This isn't a hate crime if the person can control what they look like. You weren't born and given life so you could mutilate your body to fucking grotesque forms; we look the way we do for a reason, don't be surprised whenever you get hate for destroying your head and face with "modifications". It's natural for people to be scared of severely "different" looking people, if people with disgusting and devilish looking body modifications don't want to be hated or feared, maybe they should've considered the consequences of body modification before they did it.

Arabs and Jews have distinctive features which whether or not they are religious, leads to them clearly being labelled as such. An Arabic man is clearly Arabic. Jews can sometimes be mistaken for a "gentile" but this is not always the case. In this way facial feature are clear pointers.

In terms of the LGBT community when two men walk together holding hands they stand out, or when a gay man wears more feminine clothing he stands out or acts in a more stereo-typically gay manner he stands out. Ill concede that it is not as clear with gays as with a race of peoples but there are definite signs that a random raging homophobe in the street can pick up on none the less.

They stand out now, but perhaps in 100 years time when society if no longer thinking about it, they won't notice so much. A woman in trousers would have once caused quite a stir... Now you don't even bat an eyelid.

Many things come and go with social opinion. This might be the next thing to pass through. Although, I am wary of it for safety's sake.
