The text editor made by Github's community was developed in Coffee script I'm pretty sure.

EDIT: I totally agree though, I never found the use for it besides it being a rip off of JS.

Coffeescript is actually a pretty popular, it's not an alternative to Javascript; it's a language that compiles into Javascript. Pretty much SASS/LESS for JS.
