If you want to make your website faster learn how to use Nginx. Caching, gzip compression, etc are all needed to have maximum potential.
Also, if you want your website to be faster at high traffic, I suggest looking into load balancing. It could also be done with Nginx.
EDIT: Don't use gzip compression if you're limited on CPU. It'll backfire.
