You can use MyBB 1.6 theme on 1.8 and then make some tweaks and stuff, but you cannot use 1.8 theme on MyBB 1.6 lol.

I actually had the same problem before. The solution was on a MyBB page about reuploading a js.editor file or something to fix it but I can't find that page anymore...
