Well I think you missed my point. What I meant is that cops will put less effort in tracking someone down if you SE something like Amazon than that you would do it in store.

That's what I mean, there are tons of methods to identify a person. I once saw on a documentary about staying anonymous that if the government wants they can find you by your shadow when you're walking. Well that's what I call "Fucked up".

Correct, it's more effort and costs more money when the company's insurance will generally cover it.

I saw it on TV, on Discovery Channel I think. It's not bullshit, and I did not see the full documentary, but if you like I can put some effort in finding it and I can sent it in a PM when I found it?
It was not a documentary about how to stay anonymously, but it was a documentary about living off the grid. It might be "Off the grid" (2012), but I'm not sure as I didn't see the whole documentary.
By the way, even if they say it in a documentary doesn't mean it's true.

To help fix up a few issues people have been having with this, The method isn't meant to be used 10 times.
This is usually meant to be used in quick repetition before the stores can track it, Thus Having two in my town I went to one on the tuesday I did this, and The next one on Wednesday, So if the camera(s) from the first one were to see me I would of already made the profit from the 2nd one and I wouldn't need to return to either store so they wouldn't have a facial structure to go with from a video to person because you would no longer be going to that store for a prolonged period of time for the activity to die off / suspicion to decrease.
This is technically stealing yes and there is a chance you can go to jail or be banned from your local bestbuy for this, or even have to pay the price of the item, but that being said; SE'ing or Double Dipping amazon is just the same as doing this, The only difference is that in my method you are able to do it in person, and counter the wait time of postal service(s) that amazon uses for refunds.
Don't do this method if you are worried about being caught by camera, this isn't a 100% fail-proof plan but like I mentioned above, The one time I was confronted about this, All I said was my room-mate was the computer type person so I would go home and grab the right carrd and be right back, and never returned, thus no money was taken that time so there was no need for any higher arousal of suspicious activities at the store.

TL : DR this is an alternative to stealing from amazon via receipt generator or other refund methods, and yes this is ILLEGAL, no matter how you try to obstruct the word Social Engineering, this is a crime, do it at your own risk
