RE: Young atheists - Equinox - 12-03-2015 Let's be realistic for a stick stack. These are just children, and as Jim Jefferies once stated (I believe in his alcoholocaust gig?), there are good atheists and bad atheists. A good atheist is one who doesn't try to belittle another for believing in religion, quite the opposite, they embrace it, i.e. another believing. Whether theist or atheist, you should always embrace anothers willingness to believe or not to believe, that's just part of being a good person all around. Back to my original point, these are children, they don't understand the rammifications of what they post, or how harsh it can be. Perhaps you call the extremists, I just call them childish. Teens especially, since we group them in with `children` typically. RE: Young atheists - Oni - 12-03-2015 (12-03-2015, 11:43 AM)Stocking Wrote: Let's be realistic for a stick stack. ISIS has some pretty extreme religious views. Do you think tolerating what they are doing is part of being a decent human? How about the WBC? Should their picketing of funerals and other crap really be tolerated? Seems to me that religion is an excuse to be a dumbass, quite frankly. I don't see why tolerating one dumbass with stupid views on god is any worse than tolerating another dumbass with a different view on god. they're all still dumbasses. The religious views of ISIS involve intolerance, which I just established I am against. So you are intolerant of their intolerance... still makes you intolerant of their religious views. By your argument that tolerance of another's views is the hallmark of a good human... you must be a bad human? If you actually believe that religious tolerance is what makes a good human that is... why does ISIS deserve your intolerance? how about Kim Davis? She's pretty intolerant. Are you tolerant of her beliefs? No? It's okay to tell her, her beliefs are fucked up? yes? it's okay for her to tell other people what they can and cannot do with their lives? but isn't that intolerant? you're really just picking and choosing. You can't say you're tolerant of other peoples beliefs but then exclude X, Y, and Z people for A,B, and C beliefs. Thats not tolerance. thats hypocrisy. There may be different levels of absurdity... but they're all fucking absurd. Suggesting that believing in one God that hates gay people is any better than believing in a God that hate... women.... or non-muslims... or whoever else... is just plain stupid. You can't be tolerant of one, and intolerant of another simply because you think one is 'more' intolerant. So basically, anyone that believes in a major religion, is - or should be - intolerant of something. Which means they're all bad humans by your argument. that's a lot of fucking people. I don't quite see why I should be tolerant of people, like christians and muslims, who are inherently intolerant of others who don't share their beliefs either. RE: Young atheists - Fantasy - 12-03-2015 I'd consider myself a "young atheist" and I disagree with this. I do see some "atheists" that are like this but more often then none, this rarely happens. The people you're talking about aren't real atheists, real atheists are somebody who simply doesn't believe in a god, and doesn't hate on other people who do believe in a god. I'm an atheist and I know lots of Christians, most of the people in my family are Christian. That's a pretty flawed logic. I'm not defending atheists who hate theists, don't get me wrong, but them choosing to dislike/put down theists doesn't automatically make them not an atheist. It just makes them obnoxious flamboyant atheists. An atheist by definition is just someone who doesn't believe in a God/supreme being. I wouldn't consider somebody who bashes every single other religion except there's a true atheist, that's just somebody who enjoys bashing other religions just because it's followers don't follow the same thing they do. Throwing around these terms in an argument is pointless until these terms are firstly defined. How are we defining atheist? How are we defining a true atheist? How are they different? You can't expect us to understand your position when you're using a self-defined term. But if you're trying to differentiate a true atheist from an atheist by claiming that a regular atheist isn't actually an atheist, I will disagree. The term atheist doesn't go further than someone who lacks beliefs in deities. You can't start attaching attributes and behaviors to the meaning and then claim that is the "true" meaning of the word. Through definition a true atheist is purely someone who does not believe there is a god, whether they are an asshole about it or not is a truly different topic of conversation.. |
